Marcus Ghecraerts was a pioneer in many respects : one of the first artists to use etching extensively for illustrating books , filling his designs with naturalistic detail . He is the first known etcher to practice in England . His masterly illustrations for De Dene's version of Aesop were copied several times and remained popular for over 150 years , and through Aegidius Sadeler , W . Hollar , Francis Barlow , and Jan L . Krafft his naturalistic approach influenced the course of European book trating .
