of Rcafoning was but very little made ule of in Phy - iick , and feems to have had but very little Regard for it himfclf ; yet the Means of Information he hath herein ufed , have fo fteadily guided him out the whole , that there is but very little advanced , but what is conformable anil applicable thereunto , and what may be demonflrated with the utmoil Clcarnefs and Certainty . And this Succefs he hath herein met , which is plainly owing to his Difregard of all PrepolTeifions , following Nature in her plicity , and grounding his Conclufions only upon fenfible Evidences and Fafts ; which in this Effay 1 Jhall endeavour to prove arc our only Means of formation in thefe Studies , and that they only fumi ih us with all our Materials of Knowledge in Ph y fieli . If therefore in the Profecution of this Matter the Reader fluii think , that lome Thoughts arc drawn out into too great a Length , I hope it may be excufed , if they arc found but at all conducive to the Illuftration of an Affair of this Importance . 
When a Perfon fets out upon any Enquiry , thing can be of greater Concern , than to be firft well acquainted with the Powers and Capacities of his own Mind , and the Means by which only the Matter he has in Purfuit is attainable . For as the Capacities of the Mind arc very extenfivc , fo every one but indifferently converlant with himfelf , will alio by Experience find , that there is a great deal of Difference in the Means by which it is fitted to receive all its Materials of Knowledge ; and that the fame Ways by which it comes by its Notices of one thing , and by which it is carried on to all the fevcral Degrees of A fient , is vaftly different from die Means by which it receives its Informations about fome others .
