ANDERSEN'S TALES.
seeing paper burnt, because it sends up such pretty
flames, and so many red sparks are afterwards seen
twinkling in the ashes, and popping out, one after the
other, so fast—so very fast. They called it « looking
at the boys coming out of school ”; and the last
spark was the schoolmaster. They often thought hg
had gone by, but then another spark would appear.
“There goes the schoolmaster,” would they say. Ay,
a deal they knew about it! If they had but dreamed
who was going by! We know who, but they did
not.
The whole hundle of old paper was placed on the
fire, and it soon kindled, « UR 1” cried the paper, ag
it flared up—¢“ Uh!” Tt was not very agreeable to
burn ; but when the whole had caught fire, the flameg
rose higher than the flax had ever seen his little
flowers shoot up, and glittered as the white linen
would never have been able to glitter. At one mo.
ment, all the written letters turned fiercely red, and
the words and thoughts were presently consumed by
the flames. “Now I’m in gq fair way to rise up to the
sun,” said the paper, in the midst of the flames ; and
it was as if a thousand voices had spoken these words
all in a breath, and the flames darted up to the top of
the chimney. *~ And then Swarm of little beings, as
many in number as the flowers of the flax had been,
more delicate than the flames, and invisible to mortal
eyes, fell down in showers, and kept hovering about.
They were lighter than the flames of which they were
born; and when the latter were extinguished, and
nothing remained of the paper but its black ashes,
they danced over jt once more; and where they
touched it, they fired a train of red sparks. “ The
children came out of school, and the schoolmaster was
the last,” said the little folks ; and they were in high
glee, as they Sang’ over the dead ashes :—
“ Heigh ho!
There they go—
The song is done, the race is run 1
