II. Quellen.
Colman gibt selbst in der Vorrede zu seiner Farce „The
Deuce is in Him“, wie überhaupt bei nahezu jedem seiner Dramen
die von ihm benutzten Quellen an. So heißt es in der dem
Stücke voraufgehenden Ankündigung: „Whoewer has read the very
entertaining collection of Moral Tales, lately published by M. Mar-
montel x ) will immediately discover that the first hint of this little
piece was taken from the episode of Lindor, in the Scrupule;
and the ridiculous conceit of being beloved for one’s own sake,
for one’s seif alone, is also admirably exposed in the first of
those tales, called Alcibiade, ou, le Moi.
That part of the fable which relates to Mademoiselle Florival,
is taken, with some alteration, from a story originally published
in one of the numbers of the 2 ) British Magazine, and said to be
founded on fact.“
für Colmans „The Man of Business“ die Vorlage abgaben.
